Arazeli Granados Builds Dreams while Teaching Reading at Southwest ISD

Arazeli Granados has been affecting students and teachers alike at Big Country Elementary since she began teaching reading there six years ago. Students come into her class with various weaknesses in reading and learning. Through her individualized teaching style, she can help many of them overcome these problems to become more successful.

Her contributions have not gone unrecognized - she's been promoted to be the reading teacher for the entire Southwest ISD.

She is changing lives. Children who just a few months ago were not participating in class are now jumping out of their seats to answer questions. "I read better and I don't have to struggle reading," a third grader said. "It makes me feel happy and glad inside." "I couldn't read big words. She helped me sound them out. That helped me read them," said another.

This teacher is not just making a difference for elementary students. At night, she works with adults to help them get their GEDs. She has used her learning from the adult education classes to help in her elementary classes. She sees first hand the results for children whose dreams were deferred. "I press on to do even more, whatever it takes to help our elementary students become proficient readers."

She creates a positive learning environment every day. Some of her mottos are "Help me help you achieve" and "Yes, You CAN!" Granados truly believes that "it is my job as an educator to prepare children for what lies ahead. My goal is to encourage students to take risks with their learning and accomplish their dreams."
