Stephanie Johns Brings German and Its Heritage to Life at Smithson Valley High School | ![]() |
Stephanie Johns wanted to teach German when she graduated, but few schools included the language in their curriculum. So, Ms. Johns put her heart into teaching language arts for 16 years. Finally, three years ago, she was able to join the Smithson Valley High School campus as the German teacher, realizing her long-time dream.
Every day she makes the German language and culture come to life for students who live in an area that is heavily influenced by German immigrants who settled in Texas during the 1800s. Just as she has in all her years of teaching, she brings a special energy into her Comal ISD classroom that has a magnetic effect on her students.
As sponsor of the school's German club, she has taken students to Germany each of the past two summers. She also serves as a new teacher mentor, and she is currently mentoring a future French teacher.
Ms. Johns' mother taught school and at the same time worked to earn her Master's Degree. Observing her mother gave her plenty of inspiration. All these years later, she continues to inspire her students. Ms. Johns says she couldn't have picked a career that would be any more rewarding. "It's not just about teaching German," she says. "It's about the relationships with the kids. Whatever way they need me I like to be there. I have never regretted becoming a teacher."
