Loryn Windwehen Grows Success, One Student at a Time | ![]() |
Loryn Windwehen of Harris Middle School was awarded the KENS5 – SACU Golden Apple Award for excellence in education. As a seventh-grade science teacher in North East ISD, she does more than lab work to give her student's experiences for a lifetime.
Some of their class time is actually spent outdoors - outdoors in their garden each day. She turned an acre of dirt and weeds behind the school into a large garden with different kinds of beds and forming a Green Team club that maintains the gardens. Many of the students never grew plants or worked with soil and don't have the resources at home to do so.
Loryn reminded everyone what John Gardner said, "Much education today is monumentally ineffective. All too often we are giving young people cut flowers when we should be teaching them to grow their own plants."
