(SAN ANTONIO, TX) – San Antonio Spurs legend George Gervin, State Senator Leticia Van de Putte, State Representative Joe Farias, and San Antonio City Council members joined SACU and other community leaders in celebrating the credit union's 75th anniversary on Monday, March 8th, at the SACU corporate headquarters. SACU Board Chairman Franklin W. Burk and President Jeffrey H. Farver were on hand to extend a welcome.
Senator Van de Putte presented SACU with the Texas Treasure Business Award and a Senate Proclamation, and Representative Farias presented SACU with a House proclamation. City council members Ray Lopez, Mary Alice Cisneros and John Clamp presented the city's "SACU Day" proclamation at the event.
In a special presentation, Gervin accepted a check for the George Gervin Youth Center, in the amount of $7,500, in keeping with the credit union's 75 years of service. The youth center provides vocational training, remedial education, mentoring, tutoring, job placement, and support services to more than 1,400 of San Antonio's at-risk and disadvantaged youth and their families. Cheryl Flanagan, senior vice president, said, "This contribution is our way of giving back to an organization that mirrors many of our company's values. At SACU we honor community involvement, commitment to education, and the development of our city's youth into productive, upstanding citizens."
Chartered on March 7, 1935, SACU has served its members and its communities with innovative financial products and services for 75 years. Mayor Julián Castro proclaimed Sunday, March 7, 2010, as "SACU Day," to honor the credit union's long service and outstanding community contributions through its three-quarters of a century in San Antonio.
Texas flags were flown on March 7, 2010, over the Alamo and the State Capitol in honor of SACU, and the United States flag was flown over the U.S. Capitol building. Greater San Antonio Chamber Executive Vice President Bill Mock presented the flag from the Alamo and a special tribute from the Chamber, of which SACU has been a member for 45 years.
SACU also welcomed former SACU Board Chairmen Jeff D. Coleman, Jimmy A. Jimenez, Ernest DeWinne, Thomas M. Adams, Jack E. Horton, and W. John Soper and Edgar Zepeda, former board member. Ft. Sam Houston Garrison Commander Colonel Mary Garr, representatives from the North San Antonio Chamber and the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and many partners from businesses and the community attended. Current SACU Board and Supervisory Committee members and retirees joined SACU executives and senior staff to celebrate the landmark occasion.
"We consider it a privilege to operate our business in communities like San Antonio, Houston, Seattle, and Greensboro, because we know that it takes the support of community leaders and local business partners to make an institution like SACU thrive," Jeff Farver, president and CEO, said. "We appreciate the outpouring of congratulations we have received from our community partners, and we look forward to serving you for the next 75 years and beyond."
