SACU, the Association of Records Managers and Administrators of San Antonio (ARMA), and WOAI News 4 joined with 4 shredding companies to host the 6th Annual Shred Day on the Saturday following tax day.

Almost 2,500 people took advantage of the free shredding service, provided by Marshall Shredding, Iron Mountain, recall and Cintas Shredding. Between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., commercial shred trucks shredded or collected 59 tons of sensitive paper, which will go into recycling processes rather than contributing bulk to our overcrowded landfills. In addition, participants donated $5,000, which will be given to support Dress for Success® of San Antonio, an organization dedicated to helping women gain skills to re-enter the workforce.

"We are pleased to be able to offer a public service that is a win-win for the community. We realize that many people don't have access to shredding services. With ID Theft growing yearly, creating havoc in the lives of so many who fall victim, we try to not only get rid of sensitive papers safely but also educate the public about the danger of letting their information fall into the hands of ID thieves," Chris Jacobs, first vice president at SACU and ARMA Board Chairman, said.

Members of the community who were unable to take advantage of this service have other options, thanks to shred companies in the area. For those wishing to do a one-time shredding, Marshall Shredding now offers a drop-off service for sensitive documents. For a nominal charge, people can bring their papers to a secure warehouse to be safely shredded at the end of the day. For information, please call (210)653-2227. Check with other companies in your area to find out the services they can provide to individuals and businesses on a one-time basis.
