Lisa Taylor Creates Reading Success in Boerne ISD

Lisa Taylor understands the barriers that can get in the way of her Curington Elementary students' not only learning to read proficiently but also enjoying a lifetime of learning through books.

She says there are people who don't read, people who like to read and people who LOVE to read. Her goal for every student is to turn him or her into the third type — to instill a life-long LOVE of reading.

She studies heroes and heroines every day, and she credits her elementary school teacher as being her heroine. As a student from an at-risk home, her teacher made sure Taylor had food to eat and a safe place to come to learn. Her goal is to do the same for her students and pass what she has learned on to them.

Taylor tries to determine each child's needs and adjusts her instruction to meet them. She pays special attention to students who are low achieving and provides one-on-one mentoring. She uses active learning techniques, such as reading circles, interactive technology programs, book sharing and reading aloud to foster all students' interest in reading.

More than anything else, Lisa knows the risks students face by NOT learning to read and enjoy books. She sees students who have experienced a lot of failure in their lives find success in her classroom. She says this is her greatest reward.
