Rosemary Barnett always knew she wanted to be a teacher. Her English Language Arts students at the Discipline Alternative Education Program in the Southside Independent School District know firsthand her commitment to them.

Ms. Barnett provides a safe learning environment where her students want to achieve their full potential. She teaches by establishing a personal relationship, so they feel free to express ideas.

"She listens and she understands and she makes everything fun. I'm making better grades," eighth grader Lauren Alvarado said speaking about Rosemary Barnett.

She works tirelessly to teach them all aspects of English Language Arts, from poetry to literature, she adapts the curriculum to fit the needs of each student. Her flexible approach helps her gain the respect and trust of her students and their parents.

"My goal is for them to improve and make better decisions. There are different family lives you can't control and I want them to know when they come to school there's going to be someone here for them," explains Ms. Barnett.
